Theodore B. Shybut, MD is a leading orthopedic sports surgeon, with expertise in surgery of the knee, shoulder, and elbow. Patients and peers have recognized his excellent care with numerous awards: he is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, Texas Super Doctor, Houstonia Magazine Top Doctor, Vitals.com Patients’ Choice and Top Ten Doctor. He recently joined the prestigious Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Van Nuys, Valencia, and Porter Ranch, CA.

Due to his outstanding clinical skills and surgical proficiency he was honored with an Early Career Award for Excellence in Patient Care at Baylor College of Medicine, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018.

He cares for all levels of athletes, from weekend warriors to professionals. In addition to past experience with NFL Houston Texans, NBA Rockets, MLB Astros, MLS Dynamo, he served as team physician for the Houston SaberCats of Major League Rugby (MLS) for 5 years, head team physician for 4. He is team physician for College of the Canyons and Valencia Santa Clarita high schools. 

Dr. Shybut’s busy surgical practice covers the full spectrum of sports medicine surgery of the knee, shoulder, and elbow including arthroscopic and reconstructive surgeries. He frequently performs anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus surgery in the knee, rotator cuff and shoulder stabilization in the shoulder, and tendon and ligament repairs and reconstructions of the elbow. In addition he has extensive experience complex knee ligament reconstruction and joint preservation surgery including multi-ligament knee reconstruction, articular cartilage surgery (OATs, osteochondral allografts, autologous chondrocyte implantation, etc), surgical applications of biologic treatments such as stem cells bone marrow concentrate, and platelet rich plasma (PRP). He performs a high volume of open shoulder surgeries including Latarjet, anatomic total shoulder, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty, as well as treatment of fractures about the shoulder. He is one of a few Houston surgeons experienced with elbow arthroscopy, and ulnar collateral ligament repair and reconstruction of the elbow in baseball / throwing athletes, more commonly known as Tommy John surgery. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, earning certification in orthopedic surgery and an additional Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopedic Sports Medicine.

Dr. Shybut has two Ivy League degrees. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University. He attended medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society for performing among the top of his class. He completed five-year orthopedic surgery residency at New York University – Hospital for Joint Diseases, now known as NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, which is ranked among the best hospitals in the country for orthopedic surgery by US News. Dr. Shybut completed one year of additional fellowship training in orthopedic sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. During fellowship he developed further surgical experience including high volume ACL surgery, Tommy John and shoulder surgery, cartilage restoration, and shoulder. Dr. Shybut was recruited to the Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI) from his faculty position at Baylor College of Medicine to bring this experience and expertise to patients in the greater Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, and Valencia Santa Clarita areas.

Dr. Shybut is an innovative sports medicine surgeon. He strives to optimize surgical techniques and pioneers new strategies for complex situations in surgery. He teaches courses and trains residents and fellows. He has been a productive researcher, with publications in leading journals, and has presented his research at national meetings.

Dr. Shybut is active member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, active member of Arthroscopy Association of North America, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He serves on multiple professional society committees. Dr. Shybut is a member of the editorial board for Arthroscopy: the Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Surgery, and is a principal reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

As an undergraduate at Harvard Dr. Shybut competed in intercollegiate crew. Subsequently he ran multiple Boston and New York Marathons, with a 2:45 PR. He has run ~100 road races, and won first place overall in the 2007 Flying Pig 5K in Cincinnati, OH.

In addition to enjoying an active lifestyle and all manner of sports, he enjoys travel, history, skiing, and spending time with his family.
